ePortfolio Inspiration

I looked through a lot of ePortfolios when I was first starting to rebuild this site.  I really enjoyed seeing all of the different approaches other students before me have taken.  The fact that ePortfolios are so individualized to each learner in the DLL program really models COVA in action. In terms of navigation, Judy Cornelius’ site was well organized with all the courses and related work clearly visible on a single page which was quickly discoverable from the menu.  I also appreciated how she included images and content related to her students to show ownership beyon her DLL coursework.

Amy Atchinson’s ePortfolio had a fun color scheme and a clear navigation menu, her innovation plan was particularly well organized.  Since I am a visual person I appreciated how and her use of interesting original photos.

I also enjoyed viewing the organization of several professional sites such as that of George Couros.  Couros’ blog is well organized and modern.  He is incorporating email subscription pop-ups and doing all the things a professional who cares about building and sustaining a community should do on their website.

In addition to checking out sites on Harapnuik’s list, I did a few google searches and this article is one I strongly recommend to anyone in the process of building an online portfolio.

Here are some major take aways from my inspiration quest:

  • Establish an organized navigational structure that is scalable
  • Use consistent and clear post tags
  • Opt for original images when possible
  • Honor your style
  • Play to your strengths
  • Add a thoughtful bio
  • Don’t forget to cite
