“How” I can apply CSLE+COVA

In my second reflection over the COVA E-Book, I focused on the basis for CSLE+COVA and the “How”.  My goal was to understand some ways in which each component of COVA can be applied.

The C.O.V.A model is rooted in Constructivism, which maintains that knowledge is constructed or that new knowledge is created by building upon previous knowledge through experiencing the world.

Constructivist Classrooms Model:

  • Inquiry
  • Active Learning
  • Reflection
  • Collaboration
  • Creating Significant Learning Environments (CSLE)
  • Teachers becoming facilitators of learning

Choice relates to motivating learners to take control of their own acquisition of knowledge. This can be accomplished by presenting learners with authentic learning opportunities, sparking their curiosity and guiding them to reach individualized goals.

Ownership requires that a teacher releases control over knowledge allowing students to take responsibility for their own learning. To foster ownership teachers focus on creating significant learning environments that foster growth mindsets and a culture of purposeful feedback.  Teachers model the necessary skills and share resources and mentor students as they create their own learning experience.

Voice is the authentic manifestation which occurs after a learner has been given choice and taken ownership of their experience. Voice is dependent on CSLE and maintaining a safe environment where learners can feel heard and validated.

Authentic Learning Opportunities engage learners in real-world opportunities. In an authentic learning environment learners are encouraged to gain knowledge through experience, and engagement.

“CSLE+COVA is the synergy of creating significant learning environments by providing learners choice, ownership and voice through authentic learning opportunities.”

(Harapnuik, Thibodeaux, Cummings 2018)

To obtain my optimum results and create learners who know how to learn and adapt to our ever-changing environment, I must implement CSLE+COVA in its entirety.
